Our farm will improve Meru in the following ways

  • Enhancing Food Security: By teaching sustainable farming techniques, the farm can help reduce the region's reliance on external food sources, particularly in times of drought or economic hardship.

  • Empowering Youth: Providing agricultural education to the youth not only equips them with practical skills but also opens up new employment opportunities, contributing to the reduction of unemployment in the area.

  • Promoting Sustainable Practices: The farm can serve as a model for sustainable agriculture, demonstrating environmentally friendly practices that can be replicated by local farmers to improve the overall health and productivity of the land.

The Mainstays of Kenyan Farming

Poultry Farming

Poultry farming in Kenya is a significant part of the agricultural sector, providing livelihoods for many families. It includes rearing domesticated birds such as chickens, ducks, and turkeys for meat or eggs. This farming practice is popular due to its relatively low start-up costs and quick returns. Poultry farming in Kenya varies from small-scale, backyard operations to large commercial ventures. The sector faces challenges like disease management and access to quality feeds but remains a vital source of nutrition and income for many Kenyans.

Raised Bed Vegetable Gardens

Raised-bed vegetable gardening is a method where plants are grown in elevated soil beds above the surrounding ground. This approach is popular due to its efficient use of space, improved soil conditions, and ease of access. It allows for better control over soil quality and drainage, which can lead to higher yields. Raised beds are particularly beneficial in areas with poor native soil or limited gardening space. They also reduce the need for bending and stooping, making them accessible for a wider range of gardeners. This method is conducive to organic gardening practices and can enhance the aesthetic appeal of a garden area.
